Bereaved Families of Ontario-York Region (BFOYR) is a charitable organization that supports families and individuals who are grieving the death of a loved one. For more than 30 years, BFOYR has delivered bereavement support services by trained volunteers and staff to the York Region community. Our programs and services are free of charge which ensures people have access to caring, compassionate support. Thank you to our donors for allowing us to provide these important services and for helping individuals and families learn to live with the loss of a loved one. This would not be possible without your generosity. For more information, please visit our about us page.
COVID-19 Update from BFO-York Region
In light of the current situation, BFOYR has suspended all face-to-face meetings, support groups, training and community events until further notice. Once the Provincial Health Authorities advise that it is safe to resume activities, we will take steps accordingly. In the meantime, BFOYR is operating remotely with a number of volunteers. Our office remains closed.
We are aware that this is a difficult time for everyone, especially those who are navigating our way through the loss of a loved one. The current atmosphere and decreased face-to-face interactions can worsen feelings of loneliness and grief. While these closures are in effect, we will do our very best to offer support remotely. Please leave us a message at 1-905-898-6265 and a volunteer will return your call. If you are in crisis, please call 1-855-310-COPE (2673), the Community Crisis Response Services at York Support Services Network where you can speak with a crisis worker. You can also send a text to 1-855-310-2673 or chat with a crisis worker online via Live Chat.
Featured Resource of the Month
Apart of Me is an app created to help children and teenagers deal with the journey of grief. This app is very welcoming, calming and very easy to use. The user is taken on a journey through a colorful and lively island where they can explore. They also learn about grief during their exploration and listen to audio stories from other youth who have experienced a loss. This game does not tip toe around the topic of grief. There are breathing exercises that help with relaxation and there are also atmospheric noises which make it a very soothing experience. The app also provides other resources that can be accessed should the youth like more support. The app provides activities that can be done in real life such as journal writing (in addition to other various coping strategies). This app can be very useful to youth, we highly recommend it.
